The Hamilton Knights have been a recent edition to the Ice Factor program. The program, run and supported by volunteers, identifies and brings together school students who would have otherwise not participated in Ice Hockey and places them in a supportive team environment, all with the common goal of developing their Ice Hockey Skills. Furthermore, the Ice Factor program is not just about the "on ice" training, but also involves Life Skills classes including discussions about leadership, team work and respect to name a few. In only a small amount of time I have noticed the participating students increase their development of inter and intra personal skills, socialising and making new friends, especially during the tournament day. Statistics on attendance since the program has been introduced to Hamilton students have indicated a positive trend in attendance at school. As well as this attendance, the teachers of the participating students have indicated increased engagement and willingness to complete tasks in their given subjects. The students are also showing increasing development of responsibility, making sure their equipment it stored properly and in good order.

The above however, is not possible without the tireless work of the dedicated team who make the Ice Factor program run smoothly. Sami Mantere and his coaching team are to be congratulated on their positive approach to helping these students achieve. They are looked up to as role models by the students, and always provide an atmosphere for success for each student. I am privileged to be able to provide an avenue for young people to achieve in life, and with the help of the Ice Factor program I am sure this will happen.
